| Dana Projects website began to work |
www.proyectodana.es is the website of this project about the study and identification of good practices and selection of indicators measuring the impact of the strategies and policies of regional authorities aimed at reducing the social gap based on gender, that is, aimed at increasing the participation and integration of women into the Information and Knowledge Society, through a benchmarking and impact assessment exercise.
Descripción
The DANA project considers the digital gap based on gender in the existing inequality of opportunities for accessing and using information, knowledge and education through ICT for women. This is reflected as inequality in the three aspects of the digital gap, as the digital gap is not only related to technological aspects, it is a reflection of a combination of socioeconomic factors, limitations and lack of telecommunications and information technology infrastructures.
In the last few years an in-depth study has been made of the repercussions of the gap and the damage it causes in society; basically, the creation of generational and gender prejudice. So, data reveals that men now dominate the new world of information and technology, highlighting that this trend begins at a very early age. The gender gap is clearly wide and, if this trend is not halted, or if this process is allowed to be neutral in terms of gender, women will be even further left behind in the knowledge and information society of the future.
The origin of the digital gender gap seems to point to inequalities in access to certain professions and occupations, given that a large number of users learn to use the Internet in their work environment. In addition, the differences in the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) can aggravate the professional inequalities between the two sexes and the consequences in terms of wages, employment stability, promotion prospects and equal opportunity access.
So, solutions to the digital gap, as understood at the level of countries or social classes, require a different approach in the case of women. The DANA project rewards an approach whose starting point is the particular features of the gender problem when it comes to designing more active policies.
DANA is co-ordinated by FUNDECYT. The project is being developed in eight autonomous communities in Spain. On the Balearic Islands the IBIT Foundation is responsible for carrying out the study. The other participating communities and respective collaborating organisations are; Extremadura analysis carried out by the DANA co-ordinator, FUNDECYT; Catalonia, where ECOMIT has taken on the study; in the Basque Country it is IKERTIA; in Andalusia IIESA; in Cantabria EMCANTA; in Valencia ITI and finally in Madrid FIAP, where it is the co-ordinator.
Contribution to the Lisbon Agenda
The Lisbon Agenda considered "the creation of an Information Society for all†as one of the critical dimensions for increasing the competitiveness of the European economy, a consideration that has again been confirmed in the 2010! initiative.
Equality of opportunity between men and women is a key political objective requiring the participation of all women and men equally in decision-making on the economy and in social, cultural and civil life. The current situation shows that, although great efforts have been made to make progress in this area, the position of women in Spain is characterised by inequality in terms of income, opportunities for access to the job market and possibilities of making a career. The public administrations must promote equality in all spheres and begin actions so that the Information Society makes a decided contribution to gender equality.
DANA is financed by the Plan Avanza and the European Regional Development Fund. |
