History and different social, political and economic circumstances had left the region of Extremadura behind in the industrialisation and development process of Europe and Spain in the last few centuries. The most important contribution of Extremadura to the industrial revolution was the million emigrants who had to leave the region to find work.
The interest in developing Science and Technology in this last decade has been one of the foundations of a project for the future of the Autonomous Community of Extremadura, with the aim of creating an original Science, Technology, Economy and Society System which, due to the identity of the region, is different from that of other Spanish Autonomous Communities.
It must be remembered that the technological innovation capacity of a country depends, on one hand, on its own efforts investing funds and human resources in R&D and, on the other, on its capacity to acquire technology, knowledge, resources and technological equipment. We are crossing the threshold of a New Era, and we would like to do this from a position of solidarity and commitment, proposing alternatives created in Extremadura to the single-track philosophy, as a challenge for the imagination and the entrepreneurial spirit.
Those of us who reach this threshold to the New Age do so from unequal positions with reference to skills and possibilities to access technology and exercise leadership. The ability to make offers and operate successfully in the marketplace is an acquired skill; not everyone has access to technology, some cannot access it yet and others never will, if we continue with the current trend of economic concentration or ignore the challenges presented by change.
The Foundation for the Development of Science and Technology in Extremadura (FUNDECYT) was created in 1995, at the same time as the foundations for the desired scientific and technological advancement of the region were established, with the aim of collaborating with entrepreneurial initiatives, both as partners, and facilitating technological transfer or management to a collection of companies and initiatives so they can respond with flexibility to the constantly arising market opportunities, helping to make the most of our own history in Europe and Latin America.
To attain this objective, it will also be necessary to develop the capacity of the inhabitants of Extremadura to respond to the universe of possibilities that are on offer. A region that creates opportunities for professionals to join in with projects promoting innovation and change, spawning a generation of young people with initiative, able to generate the greatest entrepreneurial movement Extremadura has ever known, as a solid foundation for the social and economic development of the New Extremadura and the New Age.
As Nicolas Negroponte said: “When the steamroller of new technology comes along, you are either driving the steamroller or part of the road.†With FUNDECYT we are on the steamroller.
